Researchers have reported that the effect of phenolic antioxidants, vitamin E and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), on cultured cells and human low-density lipoproteins is disrupted by various synthetic chemicals and Cu2+ involved in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by redox reaction. In this article, information involved in the pro-oxidant action of vitamin E and BHT in cultured anuran leukocytes is provided in an attempt to clarify these mechanisms of antioxidant function disruption.
